A few spoilery thoughts about the Elementary finale. (For those of you who don’t know me, I’m fannish about BBC Sherlock too and have written fic for it, but as a show, man, I’m finding Elementary a healing experience!)

Spoilers ahoy

One of the most awesome things that Elementary did all season was not just make key characters women - obviously Watson and Moriarty - but not use gender as a superficial characterological distinction, by which I mean, there was no sense that men are minds and women are bodies, or men are rational and women are emotional (or even the superficial flipping of that, fuck you Xfiles, where women are limited by their rationality and men are intuitive and brilliant artists), or men are rescuers and women are endangered, or or or.

So like, I had a moment’s stomach clench at the ending of the finale when Sherlock and Joan actually *catch* Irene / Moriarty - because neither of them are supposed to be caught: Irene is the woman who beats Sherlock and Moriarty is supposed to be so powerful that only a cancelling out will do, and I also was nervous at the thing where it was supposedly Irene’s feelings for Sherlock that were a weakness—but THEN! THEN! Here’s what’s so fantastic! The way it was done was that Sherlock knew that Irene had feelings not because they were DIFFERENT but because they were the SAME! We’d been hearing about Sherlock’s incredibly strong feelings for Irene for half a season, and so this whole “you have feelings” issue was done through the lens of SIMILARITY rather than difference: human beings feel things regardless of gender omg. Sherlock says WE ARE THE SAME, YOU AND ME which is TOTALLY different from second hour Belgravia, which I hate (I love first hour Belgravia; would have been happy if the show had ended with the coat on the hook), in which Sherlock and Irene are apparently DIFFERENTIATED by having feelings and bodies and such.

Sherlock’s Irene is revealed to have a body that can be turned against her—her fucking PULSE, JESUS CHRIST—where Sherlock is all cold and whatever (never mind that he has a DICK which should register HIS attraction to Irene with *much less confusion* than her pulse, but that would be about admitting that men have PENISES and ERECTIONS rather than PHALLUSES. In fact that’s another thing that’s great about Elementary—it’s totally a show that knows about penises and shows it knows, and in fact as I sit here I think that penis might have to go in the article’s title somewhere (there’s a great article called James Bond’s Penis, maybe this should be Sherlock’s Penis.) Elementary talks about penises a LOT—Joan points out that Gregson has one, Sherlock says cock all the time (“poppy! cock!”), and I think it’s seriously part of the way in which male power is engaged with on the show. The men are PEOPLE with bodies not TV MEN. I just love it to BITS.

“Supernatural” finally gets a fan film — with one major twist.

Joining the ranks of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, the CW’s fantasy/horror series Supernatural now has its own fan film. Written by award-winning fantasy author Naomi Novik (of the Temeraire series) and directed by fanvidder Counteragent, The Other Side runs like a typical Supernatural episode—but with one important twist.

Slotting into the show somewhere around season 4, “The Other Side features a humanoid “dragon” who transforms the two main characters, Sam and Dean Winchester, into women. This handily provides the film with a believably Supernatural-esque problem to solve (seriously, for the Winchester brothers, this situation is barely weird at all), as well as avoiding the difficulty of tracking down a male fan actor who resembles the luminously beautiful Jensen Ackles.

Considering the show’s love of cheesy sci-fi storylines—not to mention the comedy potential of the hyper-masculine Dean Winchester having to walk a mile in women’s shoes—it’s surprising that Supernatural hasn’t yet featured a real episode like this. Still, The Other Side is pretty convincing. Opening with a typical “The Road So Far” sequence and a short scene with the “real” Sam and Dean, this fan film seems authentic enough that aside from some unavoidable budget issues, it could easily be a lost episode from the show… [READ MORE]
